Farmer Chengapa imagined owning a plantation after leaving the Indian Air Force. He made his dream come true with the help of his son M.C. Kariappa. With a huge desire and motivation to grow, Chengapa and his son decided to make their destiny in coffee plantation. They began to gradually buy up pieces of small farms that were for sale, expanding their coffee plantations.

Located atop the Harangal Hill overlooking the backwaters of the Harangi Dam in Madapur, a picturesque town in the Coorg district of South India, Harangal Estate brings you the finest, award-winning Arabica coffee.

There is a rich and diverse collection of indigenous fruit trees such as jamun, wild fig, breadfruit, banana, orange, avocado, mango, and non-fruit trees such as rosewood, Indian kino, nandi tree and other endemic species that give our coffees their distinct flavour. The plantation hosts wild pigs, peacocks and Indian gaur.

PROTECTION OF WILD ANIMALS

KaadKaapi is a collective in South India which keeps animals free to move and passage in the countryside and around farms.

It supports long-term sustainability by working with farmers in Chikmagalur and Coorg districts to implement wildlife-friendly cultivation methods, providing financial and advisory support, and ensuring access to premium international markets. This approach benefits both wildlife conservation and local farmers economically.

Traditional coffee agroforests in this region help preserve local biodiversity by providing alternative habitats for wildlife. However, market changes and rising cultivation costs are driving farmers towards practices that harm biodiversity.

O kávě

All the varieties offered by the KaadKaapi farmers regardless of the location of their farm are 100% arabicas. But maybe to make it easier to understand the potential of those, not so well known cultivars, it is good to see what the letters and numbers in their names stand for.

The lot from Harangal farm is the SLN 6 variety.

SLN 6 – Cross of Robusta and Arabica. This hybrid is well adaptable at medium altitudes and exhibits field tolerance to rust.

The SLN 6 variety is processed by the washed method and after the pulp is removed, the fermentation takes place for 18 hours, when the beans are in water. The coffee is then dried on the terrace for 8 days.
