ABOUT THE FARMER

Mrs. Sandra lives on a farm a bit outside of civilization. She is one of the few farmers in our country who does not have the internet and sometimes she cannot even be reached. In addition, she was ill on our last visit to Colombia, in December 2021, and preferred not to meet anyone in person. So at least we met her niece Laura and she revealed a few things about her aunt:

“My aunt’s full name is Sandra Isney Rivera Bermeo and she is 40 years old. She lives on the farm with her two sons, Juan Camilo and Andrés Felipe. Her husband works with heavy machinery and is not on the farm much, so my aunt runs everything. She runs the farm and manages all the work. Of course, her two sons help her with everything.”

Sandra learned about coffee from her parents, who were both farmers. She grew up in a large family, and is one of the younger of 17 children.

ABOUT THE FARM

Sandra does not see coffee growing as a job, but as a passion.

“My aunt partly inherited the farm and partly bought it from my mother when she was alive. She has only been involved in coffee for the last two years. She has started to improve the whole process of growing and processing coffee. Gradually, she started to buy ripe cherries from nearby farmers in order to process them better on her farm and increase their value.”

ABOUT THE LOTS

Mrs. Sandra is new to us. We got to her coffee thanks to the Riveras Association, which is led by Mr. Alejandro Ortiz and works with farmers around Pitalita. We are always looking for new and new women farmers to support in our Mujeres project and it was Sandra who caught our eye.

Caturra - washed

Our lot is of the Caturra variety from the mid-2021 harvest. This variety is processed using the traditional washed method. Drying took place for 15 to 20 days in the drying rooms on the roof of the farm.

The coffee’s profile: the combination of roasted hazelnuts and milk chocolate reminded us of Nutella. We also smelled ripe red fruit in the coffee. The coffee has a fuller body and a longer aftertaste reminiscent of fruit in chocolate.
